The Challenge
Recurrent drought is eroding household food security
El Niño-driven drought has deepened food insecurity for agro-pastoral households in Gedo Zone. Traditional rain-fed cropping in Dolow District has become increasingly unreliable, leaving households exposed to repeated production shortfalls.
Our Approach
Drought-tolerant varieties, tested and distributed with the community
HCG distributes multi-variety, drought-tolerant seed directly to households and pairs it with a controlled scientific varietal trial at the Kansahley Irrigation Scheme, generating locally-relevant evidence for national food security planning rather than relying on generic recommendations.
What We Do
- Distribution of drought-tolerant, multi-variety seed to registered households
- Controlled varietal trials (NARICA 14 rice, VENTALE 2 wheat, sunflower) at Kansahley Irrigation Scheme
- Household-level land preparation and planting support
- Direct household food consumption alongside market-oriented production
