Drought Response in Kansahley Village

Humanitarian Input Distribution

The HDPN Drought Response Pilot addresses severe climate shocks and water crises in the Gedo Zone. The project distributed 103 kg of improved seeds across 10 crop varieties to 20 chronically food-insecure households. This initiative, run jointly with the Dolow District Administration, targets communities facing acute food insecurity documented by humanitarian monitoring systems.

Securing Household Food Consumption

The distribution prioritized immediate food security and livestock survival. Farmers received complete agricultural input packages, including Sudan grass and Alfalfa, which halted escalating livestock mortality. These fodder crops strengthened pastoral livelihoods across Kansahley Village, directly supporting HCG’s integrated program model.

Climate-Smart Agricultural Production

Implementing Modern Agronomy Practices

Farmers utilized modern agronomy practices, integrating drought-tolerant seeds, vermicompost, and targeted pesticide applications like Alfas to prevent crop disease. HCG field agronomists provided hands-on training to all 20 participating households, building skills that extend beyond this pilot season.

“We successfully implemented modern agronomy practices, ensuring our crops were protected from disease and received the necessary organic nutrients to thrive.”— HCG Field Agronomy Team

Crop Yields and Market Income

By February 2026, the 10 cultivated hectares produced 210.5 quintals of crops. The harvest secured 95.5 quintals directly for household food consumption. Sales of early-maturing crops like watermelon and tomatoes generated $1,680 in cash income. View the full breakdown on the Impact page.

Peacebuilding and Gender Equity

Equal Participation for Female-Headed Households

The pilot explicitly targeted a 50 percent female-headed household participation rate. Providing women with direct asset ownership and equal access to agricultural inputs strengthened household decision-making power and community stability. This approach reflects HCG’s cross-cutting commitment to gender equity and safeguarding.

Government-Led Conflict Prevention

The Dolow District Administration led transparent beneficiary selection processes. Equitable resource distribution and monthly dialogue sessions resulted in zero recorded resource-based conflict incidents during implementation. This government partnership model, detailed in HCG’s governance framework, ensures local ownership and accountability.

“The pilot has exceeded expectations across all three pillars — delivering measurable humanitarian relief, building durable agricultural livelihoods, and maintaining community peace and cohesion.”— Dolow District & HCG Joint Progress Report
